Questa è la versione completa (lunga 16 minuti e 21 secondi) del video “FinalAssalutToTheCityOFGod”, che fa parte di City Of Kids, il lavoro di ricerca che ho fatto a Rio de Janeiro nel 2007. Rispetto alla versione precedente, ho utilizzato nuove immagini, ho lavorato sull’intera traccia musicale preparata dagli SCum (utilizzandone anche la parte finale), ed ho fatto una piccola introduzione al video. Inoltre, mi sono occupato personalmente del montaggio delle immagini.

This is the complete version (16:21) of “FinalAssalutToTheCityOFGod”: a video essay that is part of City Of Kids, the research project I developed in Rio de Janeiro, 2007. This version is different from the first one: I used new images; I worked on the entire SCum’s musical track (using also the ending, not used before); I made a little introduction to the movie. Besides, I personally did the editing of images.

In questo video ho cercato di esprimere le sensazioni che ho vissuto lavorando nella favela Rocinha, ed il mio punto di vista su quella realtà, al termine della ricerca che ho condotto in quei luoghi. Ho usato sia il montaggio (e gli accostamenti alla musica) sia Photoshop (modificando estremamente le immagini) come strumenti di un linguaggio, per esprimere ciò che volevo raccontare; per esprimere la mia interpretazione del mondo. Ho voluto rappresentare la favela come un inquietante destino globale delle megalopoli del pianeta: le città, in cui si è trasferita, dopo secoli di migrazioni, più di metà della popolazione mondiale. Sconfinate città dove vaste aree (fisiche e immaginarie) sono completamente fuori controllo, e in cui si sviluppano conflitti che stanno cambiando i connotati dell’intero pianeta. Queste immagini potrebbero raccontare i sobborghi delle megalopoli indiane come i campi profughi palestinesi, le favelas brasiliane come le periferie delle nostre città, in un possibile, inquietante e sempre più prossimo futuro.

In this video I tried to express the sensations that I lived working in favela Rocinha, and my point of view on that reality, gained at the end of the sociological research that I developed there. I used both the editing (playing with the combination between music and images) and Photoshop (extremely modifying the photos I took there) as tools of a language, in order to express my interpretation of the world, my point of view on reality. With this video, I want to tell that Rio de Janeiro seems to forebode a worrying global destiny common to all overcrowded megalopolis on earth: cities, where after centuries of migration more than half of the world population moved. They are humongous cities where large (physical and imaginary) areas are completely out of control, and where conflicts that will change the very features of the whole planet are developing. These images could just as likely portray suburbs of Indian megalopolis as well as Palestinian refugee camps, Brasilian favelas as well as the outskirts of our western cities; all sharing a common, disturbing and more and more likely future.

SCum è un collettivo musicale fondato nel 2002 da Cash (synth, sound manipulation) e Fetish (bass), due musicisti già operanti in altri progetti, uniti dalla comune passione per la sperimentazione musicale elettroacustica. Il suono è principalmente basato su synth, suoni manipolati e basso ma a seconda della session collaborano con diversi musicisti. Nelle esibizioni live sono accompagnati frequentemente da dei video studiati accoppiandoli alla musica e realizzati da diversi videomaker. Nel suono di SCum si possono trovare dalle sfuriate power-electronics e industrial alla musica concreta realizzata con fields-recordings e suoni trovati, dall’incedere doom all’ambient più tenebrosa fino al post-rock più malinconico. La loro musica è caratterizzata dal tentativo di riflettere gli stati d’animo più estremi e tenebrosi dei loro compositori in un tentativo di esorcizzarli tramite il rito catartico della composizione. Infatti le loro musiche nascono in momenti particolari della loro vita e le loro tecniche compositive prevedono l’utilizzo di diversi metodi che inducono nell’ascoltatore uno stato di angoscia e di trance malinconica rimirando l’apocalisse imminente prossima ventura. Hanno inoltre realizzato uno spettacolo di danze di fuoco e musica chiamato Feurenergie in collaborazione con il gruppo di sperimentazione di danza e teatro Chasma-Ges. Fetish inoltre suona il basso nel gruppo rock n’roll punk Long Dong Silver mentre Cash suona in due differenti progetti : il gruppo industrial-metal Filthy Generation e il progetto elettronico sperimentale Bite the sun.

SCum is a musical project founded in 2002 by Cash and Fetish, two Italian musicians already operating in other projects, joined by the common passion for the elettroacustical musical experimentation. The sound is mainly based on synth, manipulated sounds and bass guitar. The musicians collaborate with various artists, depending on the session. In live exhibition they are often accompanied by videos. In SCum’s sound is possible to find power electronics and industrial assault, concrete music realized with fields recordings and founded sounds, doom stomps, dark ambient and melancholy post-rock harmonies. SCum’s music is an attempt to express the more extreme and dark feelings of their composers, in order to exorcize them in the cathartic rite of composition. SCum utilizes different methods for writing music: that creates in listeners an anguish state and a melancholy trance, and induces listeners to think about the end of all, and the most obscure moments. SCum also performed a show of fire dances and music called “Fuerenergie”, with the group of dance and theatre experimentation “Chasma-Ges”. Fetish plays bass in the rock’n roll punk band Long Dong Silver. Cash plays in another two musical projects: industrial-metal band Filthy Generation and the electronic experimental project Bite the sun.

La cosa più difficile in assoluto per un fotografo, è raccontare la propria città, la realtà quotidiana che scorre ogni giorno davanti agli occhi. Con queste immagini ho cercato di raccontare alcuni aspetti di Monza, la città in cui vivo. Monza è una città vuota. Passeggiando per le strade, ci sono soprattutto anziani, che giocano a carte in riva al fiume, che camminano per le strade, che guardano con diffidenza giovani e immigrati. Immigrati che lavorano, curano gli anziani, comprano, vendono. Si sposano, e hanno famiglie. Mentre Monza, città immobile e decadente, sta a guardare il suo tessuto sociale che cambia, senza essere in grado di fare nulla.

The most difficult thing, for a photographer, is to tell one’s city, the daily life running day by day under the eyes. These images try to tell some aspects of Monza, the city where I live. Monza is an empty city. Walking through the streets, there are a lot of old people, playing cards on the shore of the river, going around, looking at young people and immigrants with distrust. Immigrants that work, take care of old people, purchase and sell. Immigrants that get married, and make families. And Monza, motionless and decadent city, stands and watches his social tissue changing, without being able to do anything.

Globalwork

Globalwork è un progetto di ricerca sul territorio della costituenda Provincia di Monza e Brianza, volto a ricostruire i caratteri distintivi e le tendenze di sviluppo dell’occupazione subordinata di lavoratori immigrati nelle imprese del contesto locale in alcuni settori chiave: collaborazione domestica/lavoro di cura familiare; industria del legno e dell’arredo. La ricerca è stata ideata e proposta dal Dipartimento di Sociologia dell’Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano, in collaborazione con l’istituto di ricerca sociale applicata Synergia di Milano. Questa sezione ospita la ricerca di sociologia visuale che ho svolto lavorando con quattro lavoratori immigrati, sia clandestini che regolari, per comprendere le loro condizioni di vita e di lavoro.

Globalwork is a research project in the territory of the province of “Monza and Brianza” (situated in the northern area of Milan), that intends to develop distinguishing characters and development tendencies of immigrant employees in the local context of some key sectors: domestic collaboration and wood/furnishing industry. The research was ideated and proposed by the Department of Sociology of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano, in collaboration with the institute of social research Synergia of Milano. Here you find the visual sociology research that I developed, working with four immigrant workers, both legal and illegal, in order to understand their life and working conditions.

Sardegna

Questa è la storia dei paesi dell’entroterra della Sardegna: una realtà ben lontana dalle coste del Nord dell’isola, colonizzate e distrutte dal turismo dei VIP e dal turismo di massa. Le foto raccontano una realtà inaccessibile, che vive spesso difficoltà economiche, e che è stata quindi abbandonata dalle giovani generazioni. In questi paesi sono rimasti solo gli anziani che, sebbene assediati dal mondo globalizzato, continuano pazientemente a raccontare e a far rivivere le tradizioni più antiche.

This is the story of the interior of Sardinia: a reality far away from the northern coast of the island, colonized by VIP and mass tourism. Photos tell a inaccessible reality, that often lives economic difficulties, and was thence abandoned by the young generations. In these villages remained only old people that, although pestered by globalization, continue patiently to tell and to re-animate the oldest traditions.

Questo lavoro ha come oggetto il movimento sociale dei bananeros – braccianti delle piantagioni di banane – del Nicaragua. La storia di questi lavoratori non ha bisogno di commenti: dopo aver lavorato per decine di anni nelle piantagioni della regione di Chinandega, a un salario medio di circa 1 dollaro Usa al giorno, i bananeros hanno scoperto di essere stati avvelenati da un pesticida tossico, il Nemagòn, che venne applicato a partire dagli anni ‘70 sulle piante del banano di tutta l’America Latina. Sterilità maschile, tumori, malformazioni genetiche e invecchiamento precoce sono solo alcuni dei danni che queste persone hanno subito, dopo aver vissuto per anni a contatto diretto col pesticida. Dopo le prime indagini, si venne a sapere che le multinazionali produttrici del veleno erano già a conoscenza dei suoi effetti, prima di esportarlo in Nicaragua. Da allora gli afectados por el Nemagòn si sono riuniti nella Asotraexdan (Asociaciòn de Trabajadores y Ex Trabajadores Afectados por el Nemagòn) ed hanno cominciato a richiedere degli indennizzi alle multinazionali, attraverso i tribunali nicaraguensi e statunitensi. One such work studies the social movement of the Nicaraguan “bananeros” – the peons of banana plantations. Having been worked for decades in the plantations of Chinandega’s region with a salary of about US$1 per day, “bananeros” discovered they were being poisoned by a toxic pesticide, called “Nemagòn.” This toxic pesticide has been used since the early 70s in all the banana plantations of Latin America. Male sterility, tumours, genetic deformities and premature obsolescence are just some of the injuries that these people suffer after coming into contact with the pesticide. After initial investigations, they discovered that the multinational, production companies of Nemagòn were already aware of its toxic effects before exporting it to Nicaragua. Ever since the afectados por el Nemagòn (the injured by Nemagòn) got together in the Asotraexdan (Asociaciòn de Trabajadores y Ex Trabajadores Afectados por el Nemagòn), they have begun demanding compensation from the multinational companies through Nicaraguan and US Justice Courts.
